I have a beautiful Japanese Red Maple that has been growing and doing perfectly for 3 years.  Last year it took a hit by the late freeze.  It came back but never acted happy last season.  It has thrived and come back this year just fine but it has lost its beautiful bright scarlet red color..it is now a coppery color.  It continues to put out new leaves and doesn't appear to be having any problems...but I would like to restore its rich red color.  Any suggestions?

Make sure that soil around it is really on the "acid" side.  Get that Ph Down!!

Can you suggest any hints, tips or tricks to help create acidic soil?  I've got a gardenia that would appreciate it, I'm sure. :)

Dallas' soil is very alkaline (white rock = limestone) and needs to be top-dressed with compost regularly.  Around my acid lovers, I top dress with Vital Earth azalea/camellia soil every 1-3 years as the soil gets used up.  Lay 1/2" or so on top of the soil under the canopy of your azaleas, camellias, gardenias, Japanese maples, hydrangeas and dogwoods.  I also fertilize with Hollytone each Easter, Memorial Day and Labor Day (spring, beginning of summer and end of summer).  Scatter it under the canopy, of your plants, like sprinkles on a cupcake.  This feeds and also helps "redden" up your maples.  Happy Gardening!

You can do the same for ferns, hostas, hollies and yews!
