Alpinia galanga is a common spice plant in the Orient, grown for its spicy rhizomes that are used in many oriental dishes. It is often called "Galanga Major", "Galangale", or "Laos Root". This species is hardy in Zone 8 and is the only Alpinia species that blooms every year even if subjected to a freeze. It is sold in some oriental food stores in the U.S. in a dried form. It is much better if used fresh.
