For centuries this plant was thought to have the power to drive out devils. The useful ingredients in St John's- Wort are a volatile oil, a resin, a tannin, and a dye. The dye does double duty as an antidepressant in humans. The antibacterial and astringent properties probably come from the tannin and the oil. The herb is said to sooth the digestive system. In particular, its ingredients were thought to relieve ulcers and gastritis. USE WITH CAUTION! | |
