Easy 1, 2, 3... Grow Your Own Tomatoes! Homegrown tomatoes taste best!
|
- Plan your Garden.
Your vegetable garden should be located in an area that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day and easy access to water. Use our NHG Garden Planner to create a map of your vegetable garden. Choose vegetables that you know your family will enjoy and allow the appropriate square footage for each variety to grow and thrive.
- Prepare your Soil.
Fertile, well drained soil is necessary for a successful vegetable garden. Add organic material such as Vital Earth Organic Compost and organic fertilizer such as HuMax Garden Soil Builder. Fertilizer should be applied at a rate of 3 or 4 pounds for every thousand square feet of vegetable garden.
- Plant your Vegetables.
Start Tomato Seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting time. Or, purchase Tomato Transplants for planting after March 15th and a second crop in early July. Be sure to place a tag or marker with each variety you will know what will sprout and what varieties you are harvesting. Watering your Tomatoes regularly is key. At planting, fertilize your new seedlings and transplants with Medina Plus. During the growing season, follow up with fertilizers such as Liquid Seaweed, NHG Organic Herb & Veggie Food or Rabbit Hill Farms Sul-Po-Mag to maximize yield. Espoma Tomato-tone is a versatile food that can be used for transplants and during the growing season.
