Easy 1, 2, 3... Grow Your Own Potatoes! Homegrown potatoes taste best!
For more info, print out our potato planting guide for
excellent tips on harvesting and more! Go here.

- Plan
for Potatoes! Yum!
Your potato garden,
as with most veggies, should be located in an area that receives at least 6
hours of direct sunlight each day and easy access to water. Start seed
potatoes in late winter, 6 weeks before the average last frost (late Jan/early
Feb). Large seed potatoes may be cut in 2 pieces, as long as each piece has two
or three eyes. Dust with Dusting Sulphur to avoid rot and let them dry
for about 2-3 days after cutting and before planting.
- Prepare
your Soil.
Plant potatoes in
well-drained soil that has lots of organic compost so that it is slightly
acidic. Acidified Cottonburr Compost is perfect! In containers, use
landscapers mix or any other highly organic mix. At planting, work in NHG
Organic Herb and Veggie Food.
- Plant
your Vegetables.
Plant potato
seeds 2”-3” deep in clay soil, twice that in sandy soil. Reserve extra soil
between plants. Backfill the holes with Pine Straw. As leaves rise
through the straw, begin to mound the new growth with the saved soil. During
the growing season, follow up with fertilizers such as Liquid Seaweed,
Espoma Garden Manure or Alfalfa Meal to maximize yield.
Enjoy!
