Easy 1, 2, 3... Grow Your Own Onions!
Homegrown potatoes taste best!

            1. Plan your Garden. Your vegetable garden should be located in an area that  receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day and easy access to water.  Use our NHG Garden Planner to create a map of your vegetable garden. Choose vegetables that you know your family will enjoy and allow the appropriate square footage for each variety to grow and thrive.
            2. Prepare your Soil. Fertile, well drained soil is necessary for a successful vegetable garden. Add organic material such as Organic Compost and organic fertilizer such as Humax Plant and Soil Food. Onions are best grown on raised beds at least four inches high and 20 inches wide. Onion yield can be increased by banding a phosphorous rich fertilizer, such as  NHG Organic Herb & Veggie Food, 2 to 3 inches below transplants at planting time. Make a trench in the top of the bed fours inches deep, distribute one-half cup of the fertilizer per 10 linear feet of row, cover the fertilizer with two inches of soil and plant the transplants.
            3. Plant your Onions. Set plants out approximately one inch deep with a four-inch spacing. On the raised bed, set two rows on each bed, four inches in from the side of the row. Should you want to harvest some of the onions during the growing season as green onions, you may plant the plants as close as two inches apart. Pull every other one, prior to them beginning to bulb, leaving some for larger onions. Transplants should be set out 4 to 6 weeks prior to the date of the last average spring freeze.
            4. Harvest large onions when the stalks fall over in about early to mid summer. Harvest smaller onions as desired.
Allow large onions to cure before storage by pulling and drying in either sun or a dry place (such as a garage).
Store in a cool dry location in mesh bags. Check periodically for soft onions and remove. Hot onions tend to store longer than sweet onions.
When stored properly, will keep for 2-3 months.
