Easy 1, 2, 3... Grow a New Tree! Watch a tree grow into a member of the family!
|
- Pick the right tree for your location!
Be sure the mature size of the tree will not be too large for the space you have available. Tree canopies should be clear of power lines, fences and your roof line.
- Plant the right way!
Dig your hole twice the width, and no deeper than, the root ball of the tree. Place the tree in the hole making sure that it is straight. Once satisfied with its placement, remove the top half of the burlap and any ropes or wires that would inhibit trunk growth. Backfill with native soil; Hydro-compact by pushing running hose without nozzle into backfilled soil as far as possible until water bubbles out. Then move hose over at least 2 feet and repeat until entire backfilled area has been compacted. Build a tree ring at least 4” in height around finished hole. The top of the tree ring should be below the flair of the root ball.
- Proper Care.
After planting, cover root area with 2-3 inches of organic mulch. Water with 1.5 inches of water every week the first year and use a root stimulator every 4 weeks such as Superthrive or, for an organic option, Carl Pool Root Activator. Use a tree and shrub fertilizer twice a year thereafter. For Dogwoods and Japanese Maples: Add ½ cup Copperas per 1” of tree caliper Or ½ cup Dr. Iron per 1” of tree caliper at planting.
Enjoy!
