March in the Garden
-
Select rose bushes the first full weekend of March during
NHG’s Rose Weekend. Ask the local rose societies and vendors for the best
advice and newest varieties.
-
Plant ornamental trees, shrubs, roses, perennials, herbs and annuals such as geraniums, petunias, snapdragons, toadflax, diascia, English daisy and alyssum.
-
Plant begonias now for best results.
-
Plant vegetables! Beginning of the month, direct seed lettuces, carrots and radishes. Transplants of tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and tender herbs can be planted after the last average frost, March 17th, and throughout spring.
-
Harvest cool season vegetable crops such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, greens and lettuces.
-
Fertilize now if you didn’t do it in February. Use a root stimulator or liquid seaweed on all new plantings.
-
Repot and fertilize water garden plants with tablet
fertilizers made for that use.
-
Prune fruit trees before bud break. Wait to prune
spring-flowering shrubs and vines after flowering.
-
Purchase caladium bulbs now for the best selection! Plant in
May. Store them in a cool dry location until planting time.
-
Cutback groundcover early in the month to remove winter
damage.
-
Spray for pests on fruit trees. Use BT for caterpillars, or
release Green Lacewings and Trichagramma wasps to control aphids, mites,
thrips, and caterpillars. Treat fire ant mounds with bait early in the morning
or later in the afternoon when ants begin to forage.
-
Fertilize lawn after warm season grasses are growing and have been mowed 2-3 times. NHG 21-7-14 or Texas Tee are both greatfertilizers.
